Summer has finally knocked at our doors and it means sun, sandals, bathing suits, and bronzed skin! Here are a few tips to care of your skin and make it glow during the sunny season.
On the outside
Apply and re-apply sunscreen diligently
Remember to apply sunscreen from head to toe. It's the best way to protect your skin, especially after it's been in hibernation all winter. If you’re the forgetful type, get a moisturizer with sunscreen in it. This is a must: no girl wants to have a burn when the time comes to show off her cute new summer dress!
Soothe your skin after sun exposure
Make a home-made face mask by blending together mint, cucumber and aloe vera. Then, apply it all over your face. Leave it on for 15 minutes and then wash it off with cold water. The antioxidants in the aloe vera will provide moisturizing relief and help repair your skin, while the cucumber will calm and rehydrate it. What's more, the mint’s anti-inflammatory properties will calm and cool down your skin!
Mist away and stay fresh
Face mists are super easy to make and offer amazing benefits. In addition to cooling you down, it offers quick repair and recovery of damaged skin. Steep one bag of white-tea (antioxidant) in a cup of water. Once it cools down, add in ¼ cup of rosewater (revitaliser) and one tablespoon of jojoba oil (moisturizer). Pour it into a spray bottle (available at the Dollar store) and slip it into your handbag, and spray away when the heat hits you!
On the inside
Drink water throughout the day and eat fruits and vegetables with high water content. If you’re on the go, try bringing a bottle and a container of fresh fruit and crudités on the go to prevent dehydration and heat stroke. You can also make your own vitamin-water which will encourage you to drink more throughout the day all while getting your vitamins. Before you go to bed, fill a mason jar with fresh mint, lemon slices and strawberries then fill it with water and put it in the fridge. Enjoy it in the morning! The combinations are endless.
Make a gorgeous-skin smoothie
This delicious smoothie is great for a breakfast on the go and will help your skin maintain the healthy tan you’ve worked on over the weekend. In a blender, add 2 cups of mango (collagen stimulant), 1 cup of chopped carrots (skin protector), 1 cup of broccoli (guards against UV radiation damage), lemon juice to taste, cover with water and then blend. Serves 2.
Sip on red wine
You read that right – summer is normally all about the Rosé, but on top of having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, red wine also heals. It contains resveratrol, found in the skin of red grapes and can decrease redness from acute sunburns. In moderation of course!
