#PicoumFitTips: Tips to activate your metabolism for bikini season

With summer right around the corner, it’s time to trade in your chunky knits for summer wear and get ready for bikini season! This season, we’re sharing #PicoumFitTips where various health and fitness professionals will provide recommendations to help you feel your best this summer.

This week, Thessiane Mbaingo, personal trainer and owner of Hourglass Workout Montreal, shares her top tips on how to activate your metabolism, right on time for bikini season. A fast metabolism can help you burn more calories and will leave you feeling less bloated this summer.

No crash diet or crazy workouts here. Instead, Thessiane recommends that you make little adjustments to your lifestyle that you can stick to: “It’s not always easy to maintain a perfect balance between work, family and training,” she says. “Being healthy and active is not about being perfect; it’s about making small changes and being consistent”.

Follow these simple tips and get ready to feel your best this summer:

  1. Drink up!

    Make sure to drink enough water everyday. Water is essential for the proper functioning of the body; it’s a lubricant and helps transport nutrients throughout your body. Typically, we need 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day, but for people who workout, Thessiane recommends to drink an extra liter a day. You don’t have to just drink plain old water, you can have herbal tea, soup or smoothies to get your daily H20 requirement. “To start the day off right, have a glass of room-temperature water with a few drops of lemon juice for a morning detox effect,” Thessiane says.

  2. Vitamin D + Oxygen

    Winter can feel long and depressing for most of us. The cold, the snow and the lack of sunshine can affect our mood and motivation levels. Now that temperatures are rising, Thessiane urges you to get outside. “Go for a walk or a jog in the park. We’re very lucky to have so many outdoor green spaces in Montreal, take advantage of them!” She also suggests Trekfit Parcs, for free outdoor workouts.

    30 minutes a day

    If you’ve been sedentary for most of winter or if you haven’t been working out regularly, start by scheduling 30 minutes of physical activity every day. When summer approaches, the pressure is on us to whip ourselves into shape in very little time. “The mistake I see very often, is that many people get too intense about their workout too fast. They workout five to six times a week for an hour or more, and that’s a recipe for a burnout,” Thessiane warns. To be successful, she recommends making an achievable goal such as any physical activity for 30 minutes a day at least three times a week, and to up the frequency progressively at your own pace. Pick activities you enjoy like walking, swimming or even dancing. “It’s always important to enjoy what you’re doing and to listen to your body!”
